OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. — An Okaloosa County School District second grader tied for sixth place in the Envision Credit Union Regional Spelling Bee in Tallahassee earlier this month, becoming the youngest competitor in the event.
Wight Elementary student Vanessa Wesbur, who won her school’s spelling bee earlier this year, advanced to the regional competition held on March 8. She made it through five rounds and tied for sixth place among older students from across the region.
Vanessa is said to have continued a long-standing tradition at Wright Elementary, the only school in the Okaloosa County School District that participates in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. As school champion, she automatically advanced to the regional level.

Her parents, along with teachers Angie Willis and Mandy Bennett, attended the event to support her.
“Our Wright Elementary family is so proud of Vanessa’s great success in this competition,” said Principal Suzanne Boyd.
“Her accomplishment is just one example of the dedicated student she is every day. Vanessa’s drive, poise, and commitment to being the best she can be shows in everything she does. We look forward to seeing her continue to thrive at Wright and beyond.”
Superintendent Marcus Chambers also commended her performance.
“Vanessa’s performance at the regional spelling bee is extraordinary, especially as a second grader competing against older students,” said Mr Chambers.
“Her dedication, perseverance, and love for learning embody the excellence we strive for in Okaloosa County Schools. We are incredibly proud of her and look forward to celebrating her future successes.”
