Teams from 22 Northwest Florida high schools will compete in the 29th annual Math Bowl at Northwest Florida State College on Friday, March 4, on the Niceville Campus.

More than 170 students are expected to participate in the day-long competition that is put on by the college’s Math Department and sponsored by Team Eglin and the Air Force Research Laboratory, which is part of the Munitions Directorate.

The Math Bowl features events in solving mathematics problems first on a written test and then in ciphering matches in which teams are pitted against each other in a race against time to correctly solve various algebra, trigonometry, analytic geometry, plane geometry, calculus and miscellaneous problems. Competing schools are divided into three divisions, based on school size.

Students complete a written examination in the morning from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Afternoon ciphering matches will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Raider Arena. Math problems will be displayed on a large screen so members of the audience can match their wits against the student competitors. The public is invited to the ciphering match and to the awards ceremony that will immediately follow the afternoon competition.

For more information concerning the Math Bowl, contact the NWF State College Math Department at 850-729-5377.
