FLORIDA – A grand jury has indicted a South Florida doctor, charging him with unlawfully distributing opioids at his pain management clinic.

According to court documents, Dr. Daniel Alberto Carpman, 70, of Miami, allegedly engaged in the unlawful distribution of oxycodone at his pain management clinic, Daniel Carpman MD Medical Center. The indictment alleges that Carpman conspired to illegally distribute opioids with two other individuals, both of whom have already pleaded guilty for their roles in re-selling the oxycodone allegedly acquired at Carpman’s pain management clinic.

Carpman is charged with one count of conspiracy to distribute opioids and four counts of illegally distributing opioids. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison on each count.

A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors, said the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida.

U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe for the Southern District of Florida, Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite, Jr. of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, Special Agent in Charge Jeffrey B. Veltri of the FBI, Miami Field Office, and Special Agent in Charge Deanne L. Reuter of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Miami Field Division, made the announcement.

FBI Miami and DEA Miami Field Division are investigating the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Clark for the Southern District of Florida and Trial Attorney Alexander Thor Pogozelski of the Criminal Division’s Fraud Section are prosecuting the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicole S. Grosnoff is handling asset forfeiture.

An indictment is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
