Brooks Bridge project brings new detours, nightly lane closures

OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has announced the following traffic disruptions in Okaloosa and Walton counties as crews continue construction and maintenance work.

OKALOOSA COUNTY

— Brooks Bridge Replacement Project:
The roadway west of the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Convention Center is closed from U.S. 98 to just north of the roundabout, including a partial roundabout closure, through mid-2026.

Access to the Convention Center remains open via Pier Road, and properties north of U.S. 98, including Marler Park and the boat launch, can be reached via Santa Rosa Boulevard. U.S. 98 eastbound drivers will detour via the newly constructed East Connection. Detour signage is in place.

Additional nightly disruptions are scheduled Sunday, Sept. 7, through Thursday, Sept. 11, from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.:

  • Nighttime intermittent single-lane closures of Santa Rosa Boulevard north of U.S. 98 for bridge deck pours. Access to properties will be maintained.
  • Alternating lane closures on U.S. 98 from Ferry Road to Pier Road and on Santa Rosa Boulevard from east of Amberjack Drive to Ross Marler Park.

— U.S. 98 Resurfacing from Josie Road to Florida Place Southeast:
Intermittent lane closures between Josie Road in Mary Esther and Florida Place Southeast in Fort Walton Beach are scheduled Sunday, Sept. 7, through Thursday, Sept. 11, from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. for signal work, paving, and striping.

— State Road 85 Improvements from State Road 123 to Hospital Drive:
The week of Sunday, Sept. 7, drivers will encounter:

  • Single-lane closures are planned Sunday, Sept. 7, through Thursday, Sept. 11, as follows:
  • Southbound between Shoal River Bridge and State Road 123, from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m.
  • Northbound between State Road 123 and Shoal River Bridge, from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
  • Northbound between Shoal River Bridge and Interstate 10, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Southbound between Interstate 10 and Shoal River Bridge, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

— State Road 85 Resurfacing and Safety Improvements from Hospital Drive to U.S. 90:
Intermittent lane closures are planned Sunday, Sept. 7 through Thursday, Sept. 11, from 7:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. for paving operations.

WALTON COUNTY

— U.S. 331 Resurfacing from south of Interstate 10 to U.S. 90:
The week of Sunday, Sept. 7, drivers will encounter:

  • A temporary closure of the U.S. 331 northbound outside right-turn lane at U.S. 90. One left-turn lane and one shared left/right-turn lane remain open.
  • A temporary closure of the U.S. 90 westbound outside travel lane between 11th Street and U.S. 331. One westbound travel lane and a left-turn lane to U.S. 331 remain open.

— U.S. 98 Intersection Improvements at U.S. 331:
Intermittent lane closures are scheduled Sunday, Sept. 7, through Thursday, Sept. 11, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for paving.

All planned activities are weather-dependent and may be delayed or rescheduled in the event of inclement weather. According to FDOT, drivers are urged to use caution, especially at night, when traveling through work zones, and to watch for workers and equipment entering and exiting the roadway.
