The advisory affects waters in the Gap Creek area extending to Cinco Bayou in Fort Walton Beach. Drinking water is not impacted by the advisory.

The Florida Department of Health in Okaloosa County (DOH-Okaloosa) warned that wastewater contamination can present several health hazards. The water may contain untreated human sewage with microbes that can cause gastrointestinal illness and other diseases.

Officials urge anyone coming into contact with the affected waterway to wash thoroughly, especially before eating or drinking.

Children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems are considered particularly vulnerable and should take extra precautions when near the water.

Okaloosa County is conducting water quality monitoring and testing in the affected area. The advisory will remain in place until testing confirms the water is safe, and DOH-Okaloosa issues an update.
