FLORIDA. — Historic Cocoa Village has been named the Florida Main Street Program of the Month for March 2025, said Secretary of State Cord Byrd.
Historic Cocoa Village Main Street (HCVMS), located in Brevard County, is being recognized for its decades of economic revitalization, community preservation, and cultural programming. The organization has served as a Florida Main Street community since 1995.
“Historic Cocoa Village Main Street embodies community spirit, and I am proud to witness their continued growth,” said Secretary Byrd.
“This special place on the Space Coast is committed to economic development and leveraging its history to shape a strong future.”
Cocoa’s origins date back to around 1860 when American fishermen first settled the area along the Indian River. Its first commercial building was erected in 1881, and by 1885, S. F. Travis Hardware opened as a center for business and commerce.
The store still operates today, making it one of Florida’s oldest hardware stores.

Cocoa grew steadily despite challenges like a major fire in 1890 and the state’s devastating “Great Freeze” in the 1890s. The community experienced a population boom after World War II, spurred by the arrival of NASA and the space industry.
By 1960, its population had jumped to more than 12,000.
Today, Cocoa is home to over 19,000 residents and features a revitalized downtown with a waterfront park and more than 200 businesses, including art studios, restaurants, boutiques, and fitness centers.
In the last eight years alone, HCVMS has helped generate over $20 million in public and private investment, supported the creation of 110 net new businesses, and added 610 jobs in the district. Volunteers have logged more than 8,300 hours.
The organization also helped preserve historic landmarks such as the 1916 Derby Street Chapel and has developed zoning ordinances, interactive maps, and directory signage to support local commerce.
Community events like Art and Craft Fairs, Sip and Strolls, and holiday celebrations such as “Hot Cocoa Holidays” draw visitors and benefit local charities.
