MARY ESTHER, Fla. — The Florida Department of Health in Okaloosa County (DOH-Okaloosa) has issued a health advisory for Santa Rosa Sound near A-21 Road in unincorporated Mary Esther following a wastewater release.
According to DOH-Okaloosa, drinking water is not affected by the advisory.
The health department warned that waters contaminated with wastewater may contain untreated human sewage and microbes that can cause gastrointestinal illness and other diseases.
DOH-Okaloosa advised anyone who comes into contact with the affected waterway to wash thoroughly, especially before eating or drinking. The agency said children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to illness.
Okaloosa County Water & Sewer is reportedly conducting water quality monitoring and testing in the area. The health advisory will remain in place until testing results are satisfactory, according to DOH-Okaloosa.
Residents and visitors seeking more information about the possible health effects of wastewater overflow may contact DOH-Okaloosa at 850-833-9247 or visit the Florida Department of Health website.
The Florida Department of Health said additional updates will be provided through a future press release once the advisory is lifted.
