EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. — A virtual Winter Reading Program held here Dec. 1, 2020, to Jan. 31, 2021, saw participation from more than 130 Eglin community members logging more than 95,000 reading minutes.

The incentive-based program, developed for military-installation libraries worldwide, encouraged reading to develop minds and imaginations, make new discoveries and promote a love and appreciation of libraries, according to Jennifer Kepple, Eglin Library’s supervisory librarian.

“We know this has been a difficult year for many due to COVID-19.  We wanted to host a fun, free, virtual program to lift the spirits of Eglin’s avid readers,” said Kepple.

The library hosts an annual Summer Reading Program, but added the Winter Reading Program for the first time in six years.  Participation in the virtual program led to interest in the base library’s services, according to Kepple.

A square digital ad for Midbay Veterinary Hospital with multiple dogs of different breeds, a blue veterinary cross logo, Dr. Maya Chapman’s contact information, and a “Click” button for scheduling an appointment.

“Offering a virtual reading program allowed patrons to physically engage with the library,” Kepple said.  “When they visit the library to receive incentives, they can also learn about our growing collection of over 4,500 physical items, check out our 3D printer, or use our computers.”
