FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. — The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has announced a temporary nighttime traffic shift on U.S. 98 over Brooks Bridge as part of ongoing construction work.
According to the FDOT, drivers will encounter the traffic shift during the week of Sunday, April 26, between 9 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.
During this time, westbound U.S. 98 traffic will be reduced to a single lane and shifted onto the eastbound side of the roadway, from Santa Rosa Boulevard on Okaloosa Island to west of Perry Avenue in Fort Walton Beach. Eastbound traffic will also be reduced to a single lane overnight.
The FDOT said the temporary configuration is necessary to allow crews to continue construction activities on the new bridge. Law enforcement officers will be on-site to direct motorists safely through the work zone.
Drivers should also expect intermittent lane closures on U.S. 98 from Ferry Road to Pier Road Sunday through Thursday nights between 9 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.
The work is part of the $171 million Brooks Bridge Replacement Project, which will add two new parallel bridges and expand the corridor to six travel lanes, replacing the existing four-lane bridge that opened in 1966.

All work is weather-dependent and may be delayed or rescheduled in the event of inclement conditions. The FDOT urges drivers to use caution, especially at night, and to watch for workers and equipment entering and exiting the roadway.
