Major traffic shifts, lane closures hit local roads

OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has announced multiple traffic disruptions across Okaloosa and Walton counties this week, including lane closures, traffic shifts, bridge work, paving operations, and temporary delays tied to ongoing construction and maintenance projects.

OKALOOSA COUNTY

— Brooks Bridge Replacement Project
Drivers may encounter intermittent lane closures on U.S. 98, from Ferry Road to Pier Road, and on Santa Rosa Boulevard, from east of Amberjack Drive to Ross Marler Park, Tuesday, May 26, through Thursday, May 28, from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. for construction activities.

— Interstate 10 at P.J. Adams Parkway Interchange
Beginning the week of Sunday, May 24, drivers traveling on Interstate 10 westbound will encounter a new traffic pattern at the P.J. Adams Parkway Interchange, future Exit 53. According to the FDOT, westbound travel lanes will shift onto the newly constructed overpass as part of interchange construction. This traffic pattern will become the permanent configuration for westbound drivers.

— State Road 85 resurfacing from U.S. 98 to Richbourg Avenue
Drivers will encounter intermittent northbound outside lane closures on State Road 85 between Yacht Club Drive NE and the bridge at Cinco Bayou beginning Tuesday, May 26, through Thursday, May 28, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. while crews install drainage structures.

  • As part of this work, the entrance to Laguna Landing Condominiums will be temporarily closed. Residents will access State Road 85 via Yacht Club Drive NE. The FDOT said signage will be in place to guide drivers safely through the work zone.
  • Pedestrians will also encounter intermittent sidewalk closures while crews install new pedestrian signals along State Road 85.

— U.S. 98 resurfacing from Santa Rosa County line to west of Josie Road
Motorists should expect shoulder closures within the project limits on U.S. 98 from Tuesday, May 26, through Thursday, May 28, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for utility relocation and median improvements.

Lane closures are also scheduled Tuesday, May 26, through Thursday, May 28, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for median improvements.

— State Road 293 resurfacing from U.S. 98 to the Mid-Bay Bridge
Drivers will encounter intermittent lane closures on U.S. 98 from Paraiso Boulevard to Regions Way, and on State Road 293 from U.S. 98 to the Mid-Bay Bridge, Tuesday, May 26, through Thursday, May 28, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. for milling and paving operations.

— State Road 293 resurfacing from Mid-Bay Bridge to Range Road
Drivers may encounter intermittent nighttime lane closures beginning Tuesday night, May 26, through Thursday, May 28, for milling and paving activities.

— Interstate 10 resurfacing from east of Shoal River Bridge to west of State Road 285
Drivers will encounter nighttime alternating lane closures in both directions between mile markers 64 and 67, Tuesday, May 26, through Thursday, May 28, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 a.m. for paving operations.

WALTON COUNTY

— Western Lake Bridge Replacement Project
Drivers may encounter temporary County Road 30A traffic stoppages near Western Lake Bridge Sunday, May 24, through Saturday, May 30, from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. for pile driving operations and delivery of construction equipment.

According to the FDOT, delays are expected to last less than 15 minutes during stoppages, and intermittent flagging operations will guide vehicles and pedestrians safely through the work zone.

All activities are weather-dependent and may be delayed or rescheduled in the event of inclement weather. The FDOT urges drivers to use caution, especially at night, while traveling through work zones and to watch for workers and equipment entering and exiting the roadway.
