WALTON COUNTY, Fla. — Five people were arrested and multiple vehicles were impounded over the holiday weekend as the Walton County Sheriff’s Office continued enforcement efforts targeting street racing and reckless driving along U.S. Highway 98.
According to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office, deputies made the first arrests Saturday night near the intersection of Sandestin Boulevard and U.S. 98 while assisting a disabled vehicle.
While on scene, deputies reportedly observed two vehicles stopped side by side at a red light accelerate at a high rate of speed once the light changed.
One of the drivers later admitted they were attempting to race from light to light, according to the sheriff’s office. Both drivers were arrested for street racing in violation of Florida Statute 316.191, and their vehicles were impounded for 30 days.
Additional arrests were made Sunday night when a deputy parked on Driftwood Road reportedly observed three vehicles traveling eastbound on U.S. 98 at speeds far exceeding the normal flow of traffic, while allegedly weaving aggressively between vehicles.
All three drivers were arrested for street racing, and each of their vehicles was impounded, the sheriff’s office said.
The Walton County Sheriff’s Office said street racing is dangerous, illegal, and poses serious risks to motorists and bystanders.
Deputies said the community has expressed strong concern about aggressive driving on local roadways and that enforcement efforts will continue.
