Emerald Coast drivers: US 98 updates from Panama City to Pensacola

This year, the summer season begins with more than $100 million of construction underway on U.S. 98 in Panama City Beach. Crews are widening the heavily traveled roadway from four to six travel lanes from east of Richard Jackson Boulevard to west of Mandy Lane. Work to widen U.S. 98 is currently estimated for completion in late 2027, according to the Florida Department of Transportation. (Contributed)

US HIGHWAY 98, Fla.—Motorists traveling on US 98 along the Emerald Coast should be prepared for potential delays and traffic disruptions this week due to ongoing construction and maintenance activities, according to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). This comprehensive advisory compiles FDOT’s latest updates for Bay, Walton, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, and Escambia counties, ensuring you have the most up-to-date information before you hit the road.

BAY COUNTY

— U.S. 98 west of Tyndall Drive-Airey Avenue to east of Louisiana Avenue
U.S. 98 drivers may encounter intermittent lane closures between Tyndall Drive- Airey Avenue and Louisiana Avenue through Sunday, June 30.

— Gulf Coast Parkway
U.S. 98 (Tyndall Parkway) drivers will encounter a lane closure from East 11th Street to Tram Road from Wednesday, May 29, through Saturday, June 1, from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. for turn lane construction. Traffic control devices will assist in directing motorists through the work area.

WALTON COUNTY

— U.S. 98 Pedestrian Underpass at Inlet Beach
Drivers may encounter intermittent, temporary single-lane closures on U.S. 98 near the County Road 30A intersection from Tuesday, May 28, through Thursday, May 30, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. for work list activities.

— U.S. 98 Widening from Mack Bayou Road to County Road 30A
Drivers may encounter intermittent, alternating lane closures on U.S. 98 between Mack Bayou Road and County Road 30A from Tuesday, May 28, through Thursday, May 30, 7:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., for signalization work and for crews to place thermoplastic striping.

OKALOOSA COUNTY

— Brooks Bridge Replacement Project
Drivers may encounter alternating intermittent lane closures on U.S. 98  between Ferry Road and Pier Road, from Tuesday, May 28 through Thursday, May 30, between 9 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. for utility work and construction activities:

— U.S. 98 Resurfacing from Josie Road to Florida Place Southeast
Drivers may encounter intermittent U.S. 98 lane closures between Josie Road in Mary Esther and Florida Place Southeast in Fort Walton Beach from Tuesday, May 28, through Thursday, May 30, between 8 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. for concrete work.

SANTA ROSA COUNTY

— Median and turn-lane closures on U.S. 98 from Bayshore Road to Tiger Lake Drive
Intermittent U.S. 98 lane closures and additional median closures between Bayshore Road and Tiger Lake Drive are scheduled for Tuesday, May 28, through Friday, May 31, from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. for stormwater drainage improvements and paving operations.

ESCAMBIA COUNTY

No FDOT traffic advisories were issued for U.S. 98 in Escambia County this week.

All activities are weather-dependent and may be delayed or rescheduled in the event of inclement weather. Drivers are reminded to use caution, especially at night, when traveling through a work zone and to watch for construction workers and equipment entering and exiting the roadway.
