Driver killed after dump truck hits powerline in DeFuniak Springs

DEFUNIAK SPRINGS, Fla. — A man was killed Tuesday evening after a dump truck reportedly struck a powerline and caught fire on a property off Sherwood Road, according to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred as the dump truck was unloading landscaping debris. Responding units included Walton County Fire Rescue, the Argyle Volunteer Fire Department, and the City of DeFuniak Springs Fire Department.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Power was knocked out in the area due to the impact. Crews from Choctawhatchee Electric Cooperative, Inc. (CHELCO) responded to begin restoring service.

The Florida Highway Patrol is assisting with the ongoing investigation. Officials have not yet released the identity of the deceased, pending notification of next of kin.
