WALTON COUNTY, Fla. — A DeFuniak Springs man has been arrested and charged with aggravated battery following a Sunday night fight at Morrison Springs that reportedly left a 19-year-old unconscious and required an airlift to the hospital.
The Walton County Sheriff’s Office said it responded to the incident at 7 p.m. on Sunday, August 18, with assistance from the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office. The altercation is said to have resulted in severe injuries to the victim, prompting Walton County Fire Rescue to transport him by ambulance to a nearby landing zone.
The victim was then airlifted to an area hospital by Walton Air Rescue, Florida.
Witnesses identified the suspect as Romeo Warren, 22, of S Norwood Road in DeFuniak Springs. Mr Warren reportedly fled the scene before law enforcement arrived.
After unsuccessful attempts to locate him at various addresses on Sunday, the WCSO said he was arrested Monday morning when a deputy stopped him while driving on Highway 90 in DeFuniak Springs.
In response to the incident, Sheriff Michael Adkinson emphasized the need for proactive measures, noting that Warren allegedly initiated the fight after a deputy had left the area.
“It’s clear that the suspect only felt emboldened when he knew law enforcement was no longer present,” said Adkinson.
Mr Warren has been charged with felony aggravated assault.
