OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. — Okaloosa County will begin offering sandbags to the public Wednesday afternoon ahead of potential extended rain this weekend.
Sandbags will be available beginning at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, at two locations: 714 Essex Road in the Fort Walton Beach area and 1759 South Ferdon Boulevard in Crestview, according to the Okaloosa County Board of County Commissioners.
The preparations come as forecasters monitor a developing tropical disturbance in the southwestern Gulf. The National Hurricane Center has designated the system AL92 and said a tropical depression is likely to form within the next couple of days.
The system is expected to move generally east-northeastward before turning northward later in the week. The National Hurricane Center said it remains too early to determine specific impacts along the northern Gulf Coast and urged residents in the region to continue monitoring the system.
Okaloosa County said it is making sandbags available ahead of any potential extended rainfall over the weekend. The county has not specifically attributed the expected rain to AL92.
The Essex Road sandbag location is at Stillwell Park in the Ocean City-Wright area. The South Ferdon Boulevard location is accessible from Goodwin Avenue, across from the fuel tanks.
Residents should continue monitoring local forecasts and official information from Okaloosa County and the National Hurricane Center as the Gulf system develops and its potential track becomes clearer.
The county encourages residents to register for local emergency notifications at AlertOkaloosa.com.
