OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. — Fifth-grade students across several Okaloosa County elementary schools are taking a hands-on approach to math through a new Career and Technical Education program, according to the Okaloosa County School District.
The district said its “Building Math” program is now underway at Elliott Point Elementary, Wright Elementary, and Longwood Elementary Schools.
Rather than relying only on textbooks, students are applying math concepts such as measurement, fractions, and geometry while constructing projects like toolboxes and simple structures.
Students are using rulers and tape measures, calculating fractions while cutting materials, and working with angles and shapes through construction-based activities.
They are also solving problems by determining material quantities and ensuring precise fits, turning abstract math concepts into real-world applications.
The program is led by Greg Rynearson, the district’s teacher on special assignment for Career and Technical Education.
Mr Rynearson, who has experience in the construction industry and as a former building trades teacher at Pryor Middle School, is working with students to connect classroom math to practical skills.
“Programs like Building Math exemplify our commitment to providing innovative, hands-on learning experiences that prepare students for success beyond the classroom,” said Superintendent Marcus Chambers.
“By connecting math to real-world applications, we are not only strengthening academic skills but also inspiring our students to explore future careers in high-demand fields.”
Students at participating schools are already responding with enthusiasm as they take on projects and develop new skills, the district said.
