The two deputies, Larry Carter and Bradley Pugh, were recognized for their actions during a rapidly unfolding and dangerous incident while handling an unrelated call in Fort Walton Beach, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO).

The incident occurred on August 21, 2025.

While investigating the unrelated call, one of the two deputies heard what was identified as gunfire and immediately alerted his field training officer, the sheriff’s office said.

The OCSO said the two deputies moved quickly toward the source of the threat to protect the surrounding area.

One deputy reportedly observed a suspect attempting to flee while armed with a firearm.

According to the sheriff’s office, the two deputies used positioning and clear verbal commands to prevent the suspect from escaping while maintaining control of the scene.

The suspect was taken into custody without further injury.

Investigators said the firearm used in the incident was recovered, and critical evidence was preserved due to the deputies’ rapid response.

The suspect was later determined to have been involved in a homicide that occurred in the presence of law enforcement, according to the OCSO.
