OKALOOSA ISLAND, Fla. — A motorist on Okaloosa Island reported that a white Ford F-150 hit his vehicle and drove away Saturday night, the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) announced.
According to the OCSO, the driver provided a license plate number, and deputies used Flock to obtain an image of the pickup. A deputy in Destin soon spotted the truck traveling on Highway 98 and saw signs of impairment as he followed it.
The deputy attempted a traffic stop, but the driver continued at 23 miles per hour before eventually stopping in the middle lane of Highway 98 near Indian Bayou Trail, the OCSO said.
When deputies approached the vehicle, a young child exited the back door and walked toward them. The child was unharmed.
Deputies identified the driver as Luis Montoya, 25, who is said to have been intoxicated. The OCSO later learned the truck had reportedly struck another vehicle in Destin.
Mr Montoya is now charged with DUI, hit and run leaving the scene of a crash with property damage, child neglect, resisting an officer without violence, and resisting an officer fleeing lights and sirens. He is currently in the Okaloosa County Jail with a hold for Immigration, according to the OCSO.
