VALPARAISO, Fla. — The Okaloosa STEMM Academy recently held a National History Day (NHD) Showcase, where students presented research projects aligned with the theme “Rights & Responsibilities in History.”

According to the Okaloosa County School District (OCSD), on February 27, students explored significant historical moments through multiple perspectives, competing in categories such as documentaries, exhibits, historical papers, performances, and websites.

Nineteen students earned the opportunity to advance to Florida History Day, where they will vie for a chance to compete at the National History Day® contest in Washington, D.C.

“National History Day is more than just a competition—it’s a transformative experience that empowers students with skills that extend far beyond the classroom,” said Marcus Chambers, Okaloosa County Superintendent of Schools.

“Through research, collaboration, and critical analysis, these students prepared themselves for future challenges while deepening their understanding of history’s impact on our world. I am incredibly proud of their hard work and dedication.”

STEMM Academy Principal Kimberly Nihill Taylor also emphasized the importance of the event, adding that students celebrated the rich tapestry of our past, bringing history to life through their creativity and research.

“This event not only honors the stories that have shaped our nation and others but also empowers the next generation to articulate their understanding of history. Everyone that joined us was immersed in the remarkable achievements and lessons of our collective heritage,” said Ms Nihill Taylor.

By participating in National History Day®, students took on the roles of writers, filmmakers, web designers, playwrights, and exhibit developers, strengthening key skills essential for college and career readiness. NHD fostered innovative thinking and helped prepare students to navigate the complexities of global challenges—empowering the next generation to contribute meaningfully to society, the OCSD said in an announcement.

The results of the Florida History Day competition will be announced in May.
