FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. — The Fort Walton Beach High School Viking Band has been invited to perform at the 2024 Go Bowling Military Bowl, marking its first appearance at a major national bowl game since 1989.
The 145-member band will showcase its talents in Annapolis, Maryland, at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on December 28, with live coverage on ESPN.
The Viking Band, which has represented Fort Walton Beach for over 54 years, is set to perform in the Military Bowl Parade, present the Star-Spangled Banner, and join a concert festival alongside their symphonic band.
The prestigious opportunity, an honor for the band program, is significant for the school and its community, said Fort Walton Beach High School Principal Lindsey Smith.
“We are incredibly excited and honored for the Fort Walton Beach Viking Band to perform at the Military Bowl in December,” she said.
“Coming from a proud military community, this opportunity means so much to our students, our school, and the entire community. It’s a privilege to represent Fort Walton Beach on a national stage and showcase our talented band while celebrating our deep connection to the military.”
Band Director Derek Fields emphasized the impact of this event on the students, linking it to the program’s longstanding commitment to excellence.
“This standard of excellence was set here long ago, and we’re committed to continuing that legacy. It means everything to give these students the opportunity to perform on such a large stage,” Mr Fields said.
“It’s an honor to continue this tradition and ensure our students experience something truly unforgettable.”
For seniors Bailey Maris and Jameson Dewrell, the Military Bowl marks the pinnacle of their dedication to the Viking Band.
“It’s a big honor to be picked for this parade,” said Ms Maris, who follows in her parents’ footsteps as Viking Band members.
“Getting to experience the parade and meeting other bands is exciting, especially for those of us in color guard.”
Mr. Dewrell, a member of the drumline, expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I’ve always dreamed of being part of one of those big parades you see on TV. Now, it’s happening!”
With an estimated trip cost of $130,000, the band is raising funds through community initiatives to cover expenses. Ninety-five percent of its members reportedly committed to the journey.
