NICEVILLE, Fla— Niceville Mayor Pro Tem Daniel Henkel this afternoon signed a proclamation declaring a State of Emergency exists in the City of Niceville in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic and has ordered the closing of both Lions Park and Turkey Creek Park.

The boat ramp at Lions Park will remain open at this time.

Henkel said the City of Niceville today has launched a special website dedicated to keeping city residents informed about COVID-19 and providing local information and resources related to the coronavirus: www.nicevillecovid19.com. The complete Declaration of State of Emergency proclamation is posted at the site and additional information is coming.

The closing of Lions and Turkey Creek parks take effect tomorrow.

In an interview with Niceville.com, Henkel said the state of emergency serves several purposes, including helping to make city residents more aware of the seriousness of the coronavirus pandemic and therefore encouraging them to take it more seriously.

Henkel said he is hopeful the action will stimulate residents to better practice good social distancing and other protective measures, and to encourage private businesses to have their workforce telework where possible.

“Also, in the off chance that we may need federal assistance at some point, the declaration may enable us to qualify,” said Henkel.
