EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. — When the call to respond to a suspicious package or any unexploded ordnance found here goes out, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Flight team is always ready.

Maj. Kelly Mattie, EOD flight commander, makes sure his 59-member team is properly equipped and trained.

Mattie recently won a 2017 Air Force Materiel Command annual award in the field grade officer category.

The major insures daily mission assignments are executed; the standby emergency response team is ready to respond to emergencies that involve explosive ordnance; and facilitates regular improvised explosive device and ordnance training.

Among his accomplishments, he served as the deputy task force commander at the United Nations General Assembly in New York City.  Also, he was selected to lead a multi-service operational planning team to ensure U.S. EOD forces are properly organized in the Pacific area of responsibility.

“It was very surprising to receive the award,” he said.  “It is truly an honor, but all due credit goes to the great EOD team at Eglin and the hard work they do every day to support the mission.”
