NICEVILLE, Fla. — A dedicated Walker Elementary volunteer has been recognized as the Okaloosa County School District’s Senior Outstanding Volunteer of the Year for his years of mentorship and service to students.

Sanford Hayes was honored at the June 9 School Board meeting for his commitment to mentoring more than 60 students over the past 13 years. He has volunteered over 1,300 hours at Walker Elementary School in Crestview, helping students build academic confidence, improve behavior, and make better choices through weekly mentoring sessions.

Mr Hayes is said to use a thoughtful and tailored approach with each student, incorporating games, conversations, and goal-setting to build trust and skills. His dedication never wavered—even after two double knee replacements, he continued his weekly visits with students.

A pastor and school leader, Hayes also serves on the School Advisory Council and participates in school events. His presence is said to have strengthened peer relationships and contributed to a more connected school community.

Walker Elementary and the Okaloosa County School District thanked Mr Hayes for his remarkable service and the positive difference he continues to make in the lives of students.
