DESTIN, Fla. — A Mary Esther man’s high-speed dash down Destin’s busiest highway ended not at the finish line, but with a court date and the possibility of jail time, the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) announced.

According to the OCSO, the 25-year-old driver was stopped Thursday night after a deputy clocked him driving 100 miles per hour in a 45 zone on Emerald Coast Parkway.

The OCSO said the man was charged under Florida’s new “Super Speeder Law,” which took effect July 1. The law makes it a criminal offense to drive more than 50 mph over the posted speed limit or to reach 100 mph anywhere in the state.

First offenders face up to 30 days in jail and a $500 fine. Repeat violations can bring up to 90 days in jail, a $1,000 fine, and even possible license revocation.

Deputies noted that driving at triple-digit speeds may feel like a thrill, but it’s reckless and endangers every driver, passenger, and pedestrian on the road.

The OCSO urged motorists to slow down, buckle up, and drive responsibly.
