NICEVILLE, Fla. — An eighth-grade student at Ruckel Middle School has earned statewide recognition after achieving a perfect score in a Florida math competition, according to the Okaloosa County School District.
Dean Penberthy was named a statewide winner in the Math Nation Show What You Know Showdown, a competition designed to encourage students in grades 6-8 to strengthen math skills in Geometry, Algebra 1, and Algebra 2 through practice and repetition.
According to the Okaloosa County School District (OCSD), Dean earned a perfect 10 out of 10 score on the Unit 14 “Test Yourself!” assessment. His score qualified him for a statewide raffle, where he won an ice cream party for his entire class sponsored by Math Nation.
The statewide challenge reportedly ran from April 6 through May 1 and encouraged students across Florida to improve their math performance through a competitive, interactive format.
“Dean has worked incredibly hard all year and has shown real commitment,” said Susie Watson, Dean’s Honors Algebra teacher.
“I’m so proud of him and excited that his effort is recognized statewide.”
Ruckel Middle School Principal Joe Jannazo said Dean’s achievement reflects the character and determination of the school community.
“Dean represents the best of us: grit, curiosity, and pride,” said Mr Jannnazo.
“We are proud of his accomplishment and grateful to Math Nation for recognizing our students’ dedication.”
OCSD Superintendent Marcus Chambers also praised Dean’s achievement and recognized the support of his teacher.
“Dean’s achievement is a reflection of the hard work and perseverance he has demonstrated throughout the school year, along with the dedication and encouragement of outstanding teachers like Mrs Watson,” Chambers said.
“This statewide recognition is something the entire Ruckel Middle School community can be proud of.”
