ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — Prosecutors will pursue the death penalty in a case involving the deaths of two young children discovered after a house fire, according to the Office of State Attorney Ginger Madden for the First Judicial Circuit of Florida.
The State Attorney’s Office announced that it will seek the death penalty against John Henry Walston Jr, who is accused of killing two children, ages nine and seven. The decision follows a November 7, 2025, fire at Mr Walston’s home on Flaxman Street.
Emergency responders reportedly located the bodies of both children inside the residence after firefighters extinguished the blaze. A deceased dog was also found.
According to the State Attorney’s Office, a subsequent examination by the Medical Examiner’s Office determined the children had suffered fatal cut wounds to their throats.
Mr Walston was indicted by a grand jury on two counts of first-degree homicide, sexual battery on a child under12, arson, and animal cruelty. He has a court date scheduled for January 13, 2026.
Assistant State Attorneys Bridgette Jensen, Trey Myers, and Frederick Longmire will prosecute the case.
