NICEVILLE, Fla. — All schools in the Okaloosa County School District (OCSD) have renewed their designation as Florida Purple Star Schools of Distinction, according to the district.

OCSD is also recognized as a Florida Purple Star District of Distinction, one of only five districts in the state to hold the honor. The designation is said to reflect a districtwide commitment to supporting military-connected students and helping them navigate frequent transitions.

“Our educators, staff, and community partners take great pride in serving military-connected students. We are deeply committed to ensuring that every child who walks through our doors, no matter how many times they move, feels welcomed, supported, and valued,” said Superintendent Marcus Chambers.

“This distinction reflects that commitment and our collective gratitude to those who serve our country.”

The Purple Star Schools of Distinction program was signed into law in 2021. It recognizes schools that provide exceptional resources and services for military-connected families, including transition supports and access to dedicated staff who help students adjust to new environments.

Mr Chambers said the district began following the Purple Star initiative when it was introduced during the 2021 legislative session. He added that Representative Patt Maney played a key role in bringing the program to Florida.

To qualify as a Purple Star District of Distinction, at least 75 percent of a district’s schools must meet the program’s requirements. This year, Florida Commissioner of Education Anastasios Kamoutsas announced that 451 schools across the state earned the designation, including seventy-eight new schools and 124 inaugural schools renewing their recognition.

The Florida Department of Education also recognized 16 colleges within the Florida College System as Collegiate Purple Star Campuses.
