Deputies Justin Spence and Makeena Ace-Moreno were recognized for their exceptional courage, professionalism, and decisive actions on July 6, 2025, during an incident described by the agency as an armed disturbance in the parking lot of a popular bowling and entertainment venue.

According to the OCSO, Deputy Spence was responding to an unrelated call when he saw two individuals struggling for control of a firearm. Recognizing the immediate threat to nearby civilians, he intervened, engaging the suspect in a physical struggle to wrestle the gun away.

Investigators said Deputy Spence demonstrated extraordinary bravery, ultimately gaining control of the weapon despite significant risk. Witnesses reported that the suspect had attempted to fire the gun, and an unspent round was later recovered at the scene.

Deputy Ace-Moreno, who was nearby handling another call, overheard the confrontation and immediately responded to assist. She arrived as Deputy Spence was engaged with the armed suspect and helped him secure the firearm and safely restrain the individual.

The OCSO said the deputies’ coordinated response prevented a potentially tragic outcome and reflected their shared dedication to duty, composure under pressure, and commitment to public safety.

“For their bravery, quick thinking, and decisive teamwork in the face of imminent danger, Deputies Justin Spence and Makeena Ace-Moreno are highly deserving of the Medal of Merit,” the agency stated.

“Their actions stand as an inspiration to their peers and a testament to their service to the citizens of Okaloosa County.”
