WALTON COUNTY, Fla. — Walton County Animal Services has announced it is installing six new microchip scanning stations across the county to help return lost pets to their owners, even after business hours.

The self-service scanners are located at the South Walton Sub Station, Walton County Animal Shelter, Mossy Head Sub Station, Paxton Fire Department, Woodlawn Fire Department, and Freeport Fire Department.

Each scanner location includes step-by-step instructions to guide the user through checking a found dog or cat for a microchip. If a chip is detected, contact information can be retrieved to help reunite the pet with its owner.

If no chip is found, residents are advised to call Walton County Animal Services at 850-892-8682 during normal business hours to arrange for pickup by an Animal Control Officer.

“Our goal remains the same: Reunite pets quickly and compassionately with their owners,” said Walton County Animal Services in its announcement.

“Your small action could mean the world to a worried family.”

Officials said the scanners are designed to be easy to use and accessible to the public after hours, especially in situations where a pet is found at night or on weekends when the shelter may be closed.

Walton County Animal Services is a division of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office and operates the county’s animal shelter. The department regularly handles stray pet intake and ensures all adopted animals are microchipped before going home.

Residents are encouraged to make sure their pet’s microchip is registered and the contact information is current. Updated information is key to a successful reunion if a pet is lost.
