JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A St. Augustine doctor has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for illegally prescribing controlled substances and obstructing justice, said the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida.
Scott Andrew Hollington, 59, was convicted of 14 counts of unlawfully distributing and dispensing controlled substances not for a legitimate medical purpose and five counts of obstructing justice. He was found guilty by a federal jury on July 25, 2023.
According to trial evidence, the Drug Enforcement Administration began investigating Dr Hollington after receiving a tip from the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office alleging he exchanged prescriptions for sexual favors.
The DEA later deployed five undercover officers to Hollington’s addiction clinic between February and July 2022. During those visits, Hollington is said to have issued 17 prescriptions for Schedule II, III, and IV substances—including Adderall, Xanax, Valium, and Suboxone—without conducting exams, reviewing vitals, or documenting properly.
Prosecutors said Dr Hollington asked undercover officers about their drug preferences and admitted he didn’t care about urine test results. After his indictment, he reportedly altered medical notes in each of the five undercover patients’ files, resulting in obstruction charges.
Testimony from three female victims revealed Hollington coerced or solicited sexual favors in exchange for prescriptions. One woman called him a “monster” who exploited her addiction. Another described Hollington asking if she needed a “sugar daddy” and turning a medical visit into sexually charged conversation.
The case was investigated by the DEA, St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, Ormond Beach Police Department, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and the State Attorney’s Office for the 7th Judicial Circuit.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kirwinn Mike and Ashley Washington prosecuted the case.
