Learn to cook lionfish at Whole Foods Market cooking demo

Niceville.comJune 23, 20162 Mins Read

On Monday, June 27, 2016, Whole Foods Market Destin is taking lionfish to new depths with a cooking demo designed to reinvigorate the kitchen with recipes featuring a little-known Florida delicacy with a prickly reputation.

Hosted by Chef Tim Creehan, the owner of the acclaimed Cuvee Destin restaurant, Cuvee 30A, Cuvee Catering, and the Destin Ice Market 30A, the demo kicks off at 6:30 p.m. in the Whole Foods Market Destin location and explores a new and interesting seafood option for adventurous shoppers. The demo is free and open to the public.

Lionfish, a non-native, invasive species in U.S. waters, has a negative impact on indigenous species and habitat. As a hub for certified sustainable seafood, Whole Foods Market hopes to reduce the serious environmental threat they pose by offering lionfish as a fresh and delicious seafood option at their 26 stores in Florida. Fortunately, when it comes to eating this unique species, lionfish is versatile and crowd-pleasing, making human consumption a promising way to reduce the population.

From ceviche to a simple pan sauté, its white, buttery meat lends itself to any number of different recipes, and Whole Foods Market is teaming up with local chefs to showcase creative ways to prepare the tasty predator.

Raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Creehan is a certified Executive Chef, author, and teacher who takes enormous joy in sharing his passion for cooking with others. He’s putting his own zesty Louisiana spin on seafood by demoing fried lionfish topped with creole remoulade sauce and bronzed lionfish served in an asparagus, tomato, and garlic meunière sauce.

Join Whole Foods Market in their mission to move the seafood industry toward greater sustainability by taking a peek at their seafood section. Whole lionfish is available at an affordable $9.99 per pound.

Whole Foods Market – Destin is located at 4402 Legendary Drive, Destin, FL 32541.
