NICEVILLE, Fla. — A Niceville resident and military veteran has launched a new American-made dog gear company inspired by the bravery of his late dog, Recon.
American Ruffneck Collars was founded by Niceville’s Charles Murphy, a Navy Special Operations veteran. The company builds rugged dog collars and leashes designed to handle the demands of working dogs, adventure dogs, and loyal companions.
Mr Murphy said the brand was born out of personal loss. On May 2, 2024, his dog Recon reportedly died defending him and a second dog, Malu, during a wild boar attack. That moment became the foundation for a mission rooted in loyalty and protection.
On that day, they were exploring a new trail near sunset. Recon was out ahead, doing what he always did best: leading.
Then came the crashing of brush, barking, and yelping. Several wild boar scattered. Recon had made his stand and suffered a fatal injury in the process.
“Recon wasn’t just a dog — he was family and a protector,” said Mr Murphy. “His story pushes us to build gear that’s as strong and dependable as he was.”
American Ruffneck Collars offers several models, including the Titan Tactical Collar, the Atlas Adjustable Collar made from waterproof BioThane, the Recon Rig Hands-Free Leash, and the Liberty Lead Long Line for recall training and open-space control.
The company also provides options for custom hardware and laser-engraved QR codes.
The brand emphasizes its commitment to U.S. materials, small-batch production, and detail-focused craftsmanship.
