OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Department of Health in Okaloosa County is urging residents and visitors to take precautions when swimming at beaches and pools following Hurricane Isaias because of potential water contamination and storm-related hazards.
Heavy rainfall, storm surge, and debris from the hurricane may have temporarily affected coastal and recreational water quality, according to the Florida Department of Health in Okaloosa County (DOH-Okaloosa).
The department recommends avoiding swimming in coastal waters until bacterial testing shows acceptable water quality under state guidelines. Health officials clarified that the recommendation is general post-storm precautionary guidance, not an additional formal health advisory.
Heavy winds and rainfall can increase levels of harmful bacteria in coastal waters. Sources of contamination may include failing septic systems, broken sewer lines, overflowing manholes, and wildlife, the department said.
Storm surge and floodwaters can also deposit debris along beaches, creating potential injury and contamination hazards. Residents and visitors are advised not to handle storm debris without appropriate protective equipment.
DOH-Okaloosa said it will begin bacterial testing as soon as conditions are safe and affected areas are accessible. Residents and visitors can review testing results through the Florida Department of Health’s Healthy Beaches program.
The department also recommends avoiding swimming in pools affected by the hurricane until they have been properly cleaned and are fully functional.
According to DOH-Okaloosa, pools should be cleared of debris that could cause injuries, and filtration and chemical treatment equipment must operate properly.
Pool water should be clear enough to see drain covers on the bottom, and disinfectant and pH levels should be properly balanced. Required lifesaving equipment should also be available.
Public swimming pools must receive DOH-Okaloosa approval before reopening, according to the department.
Additional information about swimming pool safety is available through the Florida Department of Health and WaterSmartFL.
DOH-Okaloosa emphasized that its recommendations are intended to help residents and visitors avoid potential health risks following the hurricane. The department has not issued any additional formal health advisories in connection with the guidance.
