Despite being notified by the IRS that her claims were baseless, Ms Dewar is said to have continued to file false returns.
The IRS issued almost $500,000 in response to her fraudulent filings. Court documents reveal that Dewar used some of these funds to buy a car, undergo plastic surgery, and renovate her home.
Ms Dewar’s sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 24. She faces up to three years in prison, supervised release, restitution, and monetary penalties.
The final sentence will be determined by a federal judge considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.
IRS Criminal Investigation is investigating the case, and the prosecution is led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Deric Zacca and Trial Attorneys Melissa S. Siskind and Kavitha Bondada of the Justice Department’s Tax Division.
