The Walton County Sheriff’s Office responded at approximately 10 p.m. on March 8 to a traffic crash with injuries involving a low-speed vehicle (LSV) and a white SUV on 30A near Triggerfish Street in Santa Rosa Beach.

Deputies arriving at the scene located two juvenile passengers in the LSV who were injured.

According to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office, one juvenile suffered a visible compound fracture to the lower leg, while the other complained of back pain.

Following the Florida Highway Patrol crash investigation, the driver of the SUV was identified as Elizabeth Ann Walker, 20, of Alabaster, Alabama.

Ms Walker was arrested and charged with DUI and causing a crash with great bodily harm, according to authorities.

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office used the incident to warn spring break visitors about the dangers of impaired driving.

“Your choices on the road have real consequences. Driving under the influence puts lives at risk. Not just your own. If you plan to drink, get a ride. Do not come to this county thinking the rules don’t apply to you. We don’t want a loss of life to have to teach you that lesson,” the WCSO said in a social media post.

Officials also reminded drivers that low-speed vehicles are subject to the same traffic laws as other vehicles in Florida but often lack the same safety protections as cars and trucks, particularly at night.

“LSVs are not toys. Although they fall under the same rules of the road in Florida as any other vehicle, at night, LSVs DO NOT have the same safety features that a car or truck has. Be smart. Keep you and your family safe and make good decisions about when and how far to take an LSV during your time here.”

Authorities also encouraged parents of teens visiting Walton County during spring break to talk with them about impaired driving and safe transportation options.

“Knowing the rules of the road for LSVs is vitally important. Learn more here: waltonso.org/lsv.”

“This crash is a sobering reminder that impaired driving can cause life-altering injuries in an instant. Help us prevent the next tragedy,” the WCSO said.
