The Walton County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called around 7 p.m. Thursday, January 29, after receiving reports of a reckless driver in a blue Nissan near West Hewitt Road and U.S. Highway 98.

Deputies located the vehicle shortly afterward, stopped in the drive-through at McDonald’s in Santa Rosa Beach.

Calyb Swank, 36, of Santa Rosa Beach, was found slumped over and unconscious behind the wheel, the sheriff’s office said.

Robert Adams, 35, of Panama City, was found in the front passenger seat unconscious, with his eyes rolled back, and was slow to regain consciousness.

Once awake, both men reportedly appeared disoriented and confused. Both denied being under the influence, according to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies searched the vehicle and reportedly found hypodermic needles, cut straws, and a black backpack containing drug paraphernalia and a white substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine.

Investigators also found Mr Adams in possession of a prescription bottle of Alprazolam that was not in his name, the sheriff’s office said. The bottle was originally filled with 90 pills, but only 37 pills remained.

Both men were arrested and transported to the Walton County Jail.

Mr Swank was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. Mr Adams faces a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription.

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office encouraged residents who observe reckless driving to contact its non-emergency line at (850) 892-8111 so a deputy can respond.

In this case, deputies did not witness reckless driving but were able to remove a driver from the roadway who could have seriously endangered himself or others, the sheriff’s office said.
