MIAMI, Fla. — A Miami tax preparer has been barred from the industry and ordered to repay more than $245,000 following a federal court ruling, according to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).

According to the DOJ, Dieuseul Jean-Louis, who operated DJL Multi-Services, agreed to a permanent injunction issued by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. The order prohibits him from preparing or assisting with tax returns, owning or working for a tax preparation business, or transferring customer lists.

The court also ordered Mr Jean-Louis to disgorge $245,275 in what the Justice Department described as ill-gotten gains from his tax preparation business. According to the complaint, Jean-Louis prepared fraudulent tax returns for customers without their knowledge, falsely claiming deductions and credits, including the fuel tax credit, American opportunity credit, and inflated earned income tax credits.

The complaint further alleged that Mr Jean-Louis falsified customers’ income and filing statuses to boost their refunds and provided them with copies of tax returns different from those filed with the IRS. The version submitted to the IRS reportedly showed larger refunds, which Jean-Louis allegedly kept for himself.

The Justice Department’s Tax Division announced the ruling, emphasizing its efforts to combat fraudulent tax return schemes.
