EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. — The U.S. Air Force has announced updates to its in-residence intermediate and senior developmental education programs for active-duty officers as part of a broader review of modernization and airpower education, according to the Secretary of the Air Force.

The Air Force said the adjustments include expanded eligibility timelines, updates to declination policies, and previously announced opportunities for family separation housing allowance. Officials noted these changes are intended to create greater flexibility for officers and units while reducing disruptions to assignments.

Under the new guidance, the eligibility window for intermediate and senior developmental education shifts by one year. Officers at the intermediate level are now eligible a year earlier, and senior-level candidates become eligible a year later.

The Air Force said this structure supports attendance at the most appropriate time in an officer’s career.

The service also highlighted ongoing changes to financial management regulations that allow eligible members to receive the family separation housing allowance if their dependents do not accompany them. This support is intended to reduce the financial strain of maintaining separate households.

Additionally, officers who are matched to a school and decline the assignment will lose any remaining eligibility window at that level. Officers still retain the option to “opt-in” for consideration.

The Air Force said time-on-station and operational deferment requirements will be enforced more strictly under the updated policy.

Another change moves the annual school selection announcement from August to late June to better align with the officer assignment timeline and reduce operational impacts for units and alternates.
