OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. — The historic SS United States ocean liner is scheduled to become the world’s largest artificial reef on November 12, when Okaloosa County plans to sink the 990-foot vessel in the Gulf about 22 nautical miles southwest of Destin-Fort Walton Beach.

The deployment, which is weather permitting, is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, November 12, 2026, according to Okaloosa County officials. A public sendoff ceremony is planned for the previous day, along with opportunities to watch the historic event live.

The SS United States has held the record for the fastest transatlantic crossing by an ocean liner since 1952. Now, more than seven decades later, the legendary vessel is preparing to make history again as an artificial reef intended to support marine life, attract divers, and benefit recreational fishing.

“This will be a historic day for Destin-Fort Walton Beach and for a ship with such a historic story,” said Okaloosa County Board Chairman Trey Goodwin.

“Her story will continue to be told by thousands of people who visit her in tandem with the SS United States Conservancy’s land-based museum.”

The vessel will be towed from its current location in Mobile, Alabama, to the deployment site several days before the scheduled sinking.

Public sendoff ceremony November 11

Okaloosa County will host a public ceremony celebrating the ship’s history on Wednesday, November 11, at 1:30 p.m. at the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Convention Center.

The event will recognize the vessel’s remarkable history and its next chapter as an underwater attraction. Light refreshments will be provided.

Live viewing party November 12

Residents and visitors who want to watch the deployment without heading offshore can attend a live viewing party at AJ’s Seafood and Oyster Bar in Destin.

The event begins at 9 a.m. Thursday, November 12, with a live feed from the deployment site displayed on the restaurant’s large outdoor screen.

Boaters urged to follow safety instructions

County officials anticipate the deployment could attract hundreds of boats to the offshore site.

Okaloosa County is coordinating with safety and security partners to manage the operation and is asking spectators on the water to follow instructions from safety boats stationed around the deployment area.

The proposed reef location is approximately 22 nautical miles southwest of Destin-Fort Walton Beach, at coordinates 30° 07.148′ N, 86° 46.755′ W.

A new chapter for a legendary ship

Launched in 1952, the SS United States became a symbol of American engineering and maritime achievement. Its record-setting speed across the Atlantic helped establish its place in maritime history.

As an artificial reef, the vessel is expected to provide habitat for numerous marine species, attract recreational divers, and support the regional fishing industry.

The project also includes plans for a land-based museum, developed in partnership with the SS United States Conservancy, to preserve the ship’s history for future generations.

According to Okaloosa County, the artificial reef project was funded entirely through tourism revenue and contributions from multiple partners.
