NICEVILLE, Fla. — The Niceville Police Department will host a free Fatal Vision Impaired Driving Course for teens ages 14 to 18 on Saturday, June 20, at the Niceville Municipal Complex.
The course will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the municipal complex parking lot at 208 Partin Drive North. Only 20 spots are available, and 10 spots remained as of Wednesday morning. The class is free.
According to the Niceville Police Department, participants will drive a course using pedal cars while wearing Fatal Vision Goggles that simulate the effects of alcohol impairment in a safe, controlled environment.
The program is designed to demonstrate the effects of alcohol and drugs on driving ability, including slowed reaction times, impaired coordination, and impaired decision-making.
Participants will also learn about the real-life consequences of impaired driving and how to make safe and responsible decisions before getting behind the wheel.
A signed liability waiver is required before participation. The waiver must be completed by both the student and a parent or guardian.
The City of Niceville recently promoted the course after Mayor Daniel Henkel tested the Fatal Vision goggles and experienced the impaired driving challenge firsthand.

According to the city, the demonstration highlighted how quickly simple tasks become difficult when impairment is involved.
