HOLT, Fla. — A woman is safe after escaping a reported hostage situation involving an armed suspect at a Holt residence, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.
The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) said deputies responded Thursday around 8 a.m. to a mobile home on Cooper Street after learning a man had allegedly entered the residence armed and held his ex-girlfriend against her will overnight.
The woman was able to escape the home and contact law enforcement.
According to the OCSO, the 47-year-old suspect had active warrants for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and criminal mischief tied to a March 27 domestic violence incident. He is said to have rammed the woman’s vehicle with his truck while she was inside it at a Highway 90 parking lot in Holt.
Deputies said the suspect refused to exit the residence after they arrived.
A loud pop was reportedly heard inside the home, prompting a response from specialized OCSO units.
After attempts to make contact were unsuccessful, deputies entered the residence shortly before 10 a.m. and found the man deceased from what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
No other injuries were reported.
The investigation remains ongoing, according to the OCSO.
