NICEVILLE, Fla. — A Niceville High School junior has been named a Sunshine State Scholar and awarded a statewide STEM scholarship, recognizing her as one of Florida’s top 11th-grade students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Emma Michel represented the Okaloosa County School District at the Sunshine State Scholars Conference in Orlando, hosted by the Florida Department of Education.
The program highlights the state’s most accomplished 11th-grade STEM students and introduces them to higher education opportunities and career pathways in science and technology fields.
Earlier this school year, Emma was selected as one of the Sunshine State Scholars Program representatives for the Okaloosa County School District, alongside Fort Walton Beach High School student Penelope Gordon.

Following the statewide conference, Emma was selected as one of only 10 students in Florida to receive a one-year scholarship through the Florida Prepaid College Foundation and the Florida Education Foundation.
According to the Okaloosa County School District, Emma completed six additional essays about her STEM interests and academic goals as part of the statewide scholarship selection process.
Superintendent Marcus Chambers praised Emma’s achievement.
“Emma represents the very best of Okaloosa County students,” said Mr Chambers.

Niceville High School Principal Charlie Marello said Emma’s accomplishments reflect the strong academic culture at the school.
“We are so proud of Emma for receiving this state-level recognition and award,” said Mr Marello.
“Emma is enrolled in five different Advanced Placement courses at Niceville High School, carries a 4.57 GPA, and is a standout performer on the NHS swim team. She is one exceptional Eagle.”
