Seasonal fishing closures take effect Jan. 1 in Gulf and Atlantic

FLORIDA — Two seasonal marine fisheries closures affecting recreational anglers will take effect Jan. 1, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Recreational harvest of gray triggerfish will close in Gulf state waters on Jan. 1 and is scheduled to reopen March 1, 2026.

Anglers can review current recreational triggerfish regulations at
https://myfwc.com/fishing/saltwater/recreational/triggerfish/
or by downloading the Fish Rules App.

In Atlantic state waters, recreational harvest of shallow water grouper will also close Jan. 1, including all state waters of Monroe County.

The shallow water grouper complex includes black, gag, yellowfin, scamp, yellowmouth, red, coney, graysby, red hind, and rock hind. The annual spawning season closure begins Jan. 1 each year to protect grouper species during spawning.

Recreational harvest of shallow water grouper in Atlantic state waters is scheduled to reopen May 1, 2026.
