EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. — Recreation permit requirements and hunting regulations at Eglin Air Force Base have been updated, the installation announced.
The changes include new background check procedures, mandatory check-in and check-out protocols, and a lottery-based deer-dog hunting permit system. Officials said the updates are designed to enhance safety, improve resource management, and protect ongoing missions.
“These updates reflect our ongoing commitment to responsible stewardship of Eglin’s natural resources while providing recreational opportunities,” said Justin Johnson, 96th Civil Engineer Group Natural Resources chief.
“Access to the reservation is a privilege, not a right — it’s important to enjoy it safely and responsibly.”
Background checks
Effective immediately, a background check is required for anyone age 16 or older applying for or renewing a recreation permit. This requirement applies to all permit types.
The 96th Security Forces Squadron is said to review potential criminal history and offense types during the process, which can take up to 72 hours. Applicants must have an iSportsman account to complete the process. New customers can register for an account on the iSportsman website.
Check-in/out procedures
Mandatory check-ins and check-outs are now required in Coastal Restriction Areas. This begins on September 27 for dove fields and October 1 for camping areas, all through the iSportsman website. The procedures are intended to keep personnel accountable on the range.
Deer-dog hunting
For the 2025–26 season, deer-dog hunting permits will be issued through a lottery system. The new rule applies to hunters age 16 or older seeking to hunt in dog hunt areas during the general gun season.
General Gun Season Dog Unit Stamps are valid from Nov. 1 through Feb. 8, 2026, and will cost $50. Applications will be accepted Sept. 15–30, with lottery results posted on the iSportsman website by Oct. 8.
Hunting within the open portions of the Eglin Reservation can occur on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays during the general gun season across all management units.
