OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. — American Airlines will launch new daily nonstop service from Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport to Miami starting December 19, adding the Florida city as an in-state travel option and expanding the airport’s growing list of destinations.
The airline will also extend its existing Chicago route to year-round service at VPS, offering consistent access through both summer and winter seasons.
Miami International Airport is described as a key gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean, with more than 70 connection options to regional destinations. American officials stated that the new route will benefit both tourism and business travelers, offering seamless connections to global markets.
“American is proud to offer the best worldwide connections for the residents of Okaloosa County to more than 350 destinations around the world,” said Jason Reisinger, Managing Director of Global Network Planning at American.
“With seamless connections to the Caribbean, Europe, Australia and everything in between, American is ready to welcome travelers on their next journey from Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport.”
Local officials praised the announcement, calling it a milestone for connectivity and quality of life in the region.
“This new route will benefit our local tourism industry while also enhancing tourism statewide through this new gateway between two great Florida locations,” said Okaloosa County Board Chairman Paul Mixon.
Vice Chairman Carolyn Ketchel expressed pride in the VPS team and enthusiasm for the potential of additional Florida destinations in the future.
Commissioner Sherri Cox called the Miami addition a “tremendous milestone” that strengthens both the local economy and regional access to international travel, cruise lines, and professional sports.
“This isn’t just a win for tourism—it’s a big win for the people of Okaloosa County,” said Ms Cox.
According to the announcement, flights to Miami will depart VPS at 6 a.m. and arrive at 8:42 a.m. Return flights from MIA will depart at 10:59 p.m. and land at VPS at 11:58 p.m. All flights will operate on dual-class Embraer 175 aircraft.
