NICEVILLE, Fla. — A Rocky Bayou Christian School student who saved a classmate from choking has been named an honorary officer and received a Life Saving Award from the Niceville Police Department.
Charlotte Walsh was recognized during a ceremony at police headquarters, where she was presented with the framed award by Chief of Police Mark Hayse. The honor celebrates her courageous action on March 10, 2025, when she reportedly performed the Heimlich maneuver to rescue a fellow student.

Charlotte’s parents, school representatives, and City of Niceville officials—including City Manager David Deitch—were in attendance for the presentation. Corporal Johnathan Newby, the school resource officer assigned to Rocky Bayou Christian School, also attended and co-signed the award alongside Chief Hayse.
The framed commendation display includes an auxiliary police badge, commendation bars, and a certificate recognizing Charlotte for her “bravery and presence of mind,” which “exemplify outstanding character and serve as an inspiration to all.”
Charlotte smiled as she accepted the award and posed for photos with Chief Hayse and others. The Life Saving Award is said to be one of the department’s highest honors for acts of civilian heroism.
