MIAMI, Fla. — A Broward County tax preparer has been charged in a federal indictment with filing fraudulent tax returns that reportedly caused the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to lose more than $2 million, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida announced.

Jimmy Desir, 46, of Miramar, is said to have filed false tax returns through his business, A1 Plus Financial Services, Inc., in North Miami Beach. He was arrested and faces 22 counts of assisting in the preparation of false and fraudulent tax returns, prosecutors announced on Wednesday.

According to the indictment, Mr Desir allegedly manipulated clients’ tax returns for several years by adding false fuel tax credits, fabricated education credits, and fraudulent Schedule Cs with fictitious business losses.

Prosecutors said these actions inflated refunds, allowing him to charge higher fees for his services.

The case was investigated by the IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS CI) Miami Field Office. The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Assistant U.S. Attorney Aimee Jimenez is prosecuting the case.

An indictment is merely an allegation. Mr Desir is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
