FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A Fort Lauderdale tax preparer has been sentenced to three years in prison for filing fraudulent tax returns that defrauded the IRS of over $574,000, federal officials announced.

Jean Volvick Moise, 39, pleaded guilty to orchestrating a scheme where he prepared false tax returns to obtain inflated refunds for his clients. According to court documents, Moise used fabricated dependents, false Form 1099 withholdings, fictitious educational credits, and non-existent business expenses on Schedule C to create fraudulent returns.

Mr Moise reportedly charged clients higher-than-normal fees for his services and filed hundreds of false returns as part of the scheme.

U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe for the Southern District of Florida and Acting Special Agent in Charge Stefanie Hipkins of the IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS CI), Miami Field Office, made the announcement.

The case was investigated by IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS CI) and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Bertha R. Mitrani.
