School employee pleads guilty to unlawfully possessing loaded firearm on campus

FLORIDA – A school employee who allegedly openly carried a loaded firearm holstered to his hip while on campus faces up to 15 years in federal prison.

United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg announced that Wyatt Olen Henderson, 64, of Cape Coral, has pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm as a previously convicted felon. He faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in federal prison. A sentencing date has not yet been set.

According to court documents, on May 12, 2023, deputies from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office encountered Henderson on a Lee County school campus, openly carrying a loaded firearm holstered to his hip. Henderson, a convicted felon who had previously served time in federal prison, was an employee of the school at the time.

As a convicted felon, Henderson is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition under federal law.

This case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Simon R. Eth is prosecuting it.
