EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. — A new commander has taken the helm of the 53rd Wing at Eglin Air Force Base, following a formal change of command ceremony held July 11.
Col. Scott A. Gunn assumed command from Col. Daniel J. Lehoski, who had led the wing since July 2023. The event was presided over by Maj. Gen. Christopher J. Niemi, commander of the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center.
“I’m incredibly humbled and honored to take command of the 53rd Wing,” said Gunn.
“This wing represents the cutting edge of combat capability. I look forward to building on an already strong legacy of innovation, collaboration, and mission excellence.”
Col. Gunn previously served as Deputy Director, Force Design, Integration, and Wargaming under the Deputy Chief of Staff for Air Force Futures. He brings extensive experience in operational testing and combat readiness to the role.
During his final remarks, Col. Lehoski reflected on the wing’s achievements during his tenure.
“It has been the honor of a lifetime to lead the men and women of the 53rd Wing,” said Lehoski.
“Together, we’ve tackled numerous complex test and evaluation challenges, ensuring our warfighters have the most capable systems at their fingertips in the shortest amount of time.”
The 53rd Wing is responsible for the operational testing and evaluation of new systems and equipment for the U.S. Air Force, as well as joint and coalition forces. With more than 1,600 Airmen, the wing operates 25 distinct platforms across 16 geographically separated locations nationwide.
Its mission includes developing and validating tactics, techniques, and procedures that contribute directly to maintaining U.S. and allied air superiority.
“The fight is evolving rapidly, and so must we,” said Gunn.
“I’m confident this team is ready to meet that challenge, and I’m proud to serve alongside each of you.”
